Whilst construction work continues apace on Bankside, registration has now opened for the HSBC Millennium Bridge Walk in aid of Save the Children on Saturday 10 June. The sponsored walk will provide both a public celebration of the opening of the new Millennium Bridge and an enjoyable way of helping the UK's leading international children's charity. Every penny raised in sponsorship will be used to support Save the Children's important educational programmes, offering hope to children in 70 countries around the world, including Mozambique, Kosovo and Angola.

The planned route for the walk is a figure of eight with the Millennium Bridge as its centrepiece. In addition to being amongst the first people to cross the new bridge, those who take part will have the chance to win some great prizes. A week's holiday for four in Barbados, courtesy of Travel Extras and Virgin Atlantic is the event's top prize and other prizes include two tickets to New York with Virgin Atlantic and ten flights to anywhere in Europe courtesy of British Midland. All registered walkers will also receive a commemorative t- shirt, free chocolate, refreshments and a special goody bag.

Adding to the atmosphere will be a wide variety of musicians performing at the main event centre and along the route. Different styles of music will be featured, offering something for everyone. Leading celebrities are also expected to come along and show their support for the walkers and for Save the Children's vital work.

Eamonn Holmes of GMTV, based on the South Bank, says, "plenty of entertainment, the chance to help a great cause and to be amongst the first to cross the bridge - The HSBC Millennium Bridge Walk in aid of Save the Children has it all! I hope as many people as possible will come and support this fantastic day out."

Just £5 in sponsorship at The HSBC Millennium Bridge Walk in aid of Save the Children could pay for 10 exercise books for children whose schools have been destroyed by war. Raise £60 and this could be used to buy 20 agricultural tools for a primary school in Ethiopia, enabling children to grow vegetables and learn agricultural skills in their school garden.
