Sandblast at City Hall

The chamber at City Hall is currently hosting a small exhibition about the Saharawi people of Western Sahara.

The Sora Project along with Sandblast, a charity that brings about awareness through the arts, are attempting to reveal the story of refugees in Algeria known as the Saharawi people.

In 1975, the Saharawi and their land in Western Sahara were taken over during a Moroccan invasion.

The invasion forced nearly 200,000 Saharawi into four different refugee camps in Southwest Algeria. For the past thirty years, the Saharawi have been attempting to carry on normal life while also seeking a return to their homeland.

Sandblast has stepped in to help by providing digital cameras for certain refugees in each camp along with training in photography.

As the refugees document their lives and strugggles through pictures, Sandblast distributes their story around the world. T

he exibition at City Hall is a display of these photographs and stories directly from Saharawi refugees. The pictures and brief captions portray the people's desire for normal lives, jobs, families and a return to their homeland.

Sandblast's "Awareness through the Arts" exhibition will be on display until 31 October.
