Pay-by-phone car parking coming to Borough and Bankside

London SE1 website team

Visitors to Bankside, Borough and London Bridge will soon be able to pay for street parking by credit or debit card.

Almost 100 on-street pay and display machines around Bankside, Borough and London Bridge will operate the RingGo service – covering the three major zones of Bankside, Borough, and London Bridge. Every on-street parking space in this area will offer the option of mobile phone parking by the end of June.

Each parking bay displays a phone number and reference number. Motorists call the phone number, enter the reference number to identify their location, and pay the parking fee without having to find the right coins.

"The borough has been looking at various cashless parking options for a while, but is now convinced that the ease of use of RingGo makes it the best choice for busy London streets," explains Southwark's parking manager Nick Costin.

"If new visitors to Southwark have never used phone parking before, it has to be clear and quick so that they get to their appointment on time."

Des Waters, Southwark's head of street scene, adds: "It may, in time, allow us to reduce the amount of street machinery as well as from the start supporting motorists who to may wish to make their payment from the privacy of their car."

The RingGo service includes a 'phone back to extend' option to allow motorists to top up their parking payment without having to return to their vehicle.
