A May Day tradition was played out on the streets of Southwark by Fowlers Troop who took their jack in the green from Borough Market on a tour of the City.

The jack in the green is an old May Day custom which has been revived in a number of towns around England since the 1980s.

The Deptford jack in the green was revived by the Blackheath Morris Men. It has visited Southwark before, notably in 2005 when it toured local pubs.

The jack is a beehive-like structure covered with foliage.

This year's tour began at the Market Porter in Borough Market's Stoney Street.

The procession's route went through the market and out into Bedale Street, up Borough High Street and onto London Bridge where the City of London jack in the green was waiting.

The two jacks – accompanied by musicians and dancers – toured the City of London and its pubs before returning to Southwark via the Millennium Bridge.

There are more May festivities – including maypole dancing – at Red Cross Garden this Thursday.
