Curator Karen Howell and assistant curator Sarah Chaney received the award on the museum's behalf from Simon Calder, travel editor of The Independent and an SE1 resident. The ceremony took place during a gala dinner at the New Connaught Rooms.

The awards, created by the Museums & Heritage Show and supported by New Heritage magazine, recognise best practice within museums, galleries and visitor attractions.

The museum in St Thomas' Street beat five other shortlisted museums in the 'project on a limited budget' category.

The award-winning project was the successful relocation of the museum from the attic to the crypt during the recent repair and restoration work of the roof space. The Old Operating Theatre was rediscovered fifty years ago in the roof of St Thomas' Church.

The Old Operating Theatre, Museum and Herb Garret is calling on local residents to become friends of the museum to support the campaign to purchase the former St Thomas' Church to enable the creation of an expanded museum.
