Billy the Kid at the Unicorn Theatre

Fergal Hanks

The Unicorn Theatre knows its audience; children. Billy the Kid, adapted from Michael Morpurgo’s book of the same name, is about an old man Billy, taking care of a teenager called Sam.

They share a passion, football. Chelsea of course. Sam is has been invited for a trial, and Billy tells the story of his very different youth, when his own hopes of footballing stardom were dashed by war.

The story, which changes smoothly between the past and the present, is performed by only two actors; Dudley Sutton as Billy and Sam Donovan as Sam. It is an emotional tale, which highlights how football has developed, from an apprenticeship involving cleaning players' boots, to the current day Academy.

At the start of the play they allowed kids to take penalties. Better still after the Saturday performance, we were able to stay on to watch the Cup Final. My friend Alex seemed to have missed the point, as he was wearing a Doncaster Rovers shirt. No Alex, this was the FA Cup, not the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Billy the kid is a great play I could watch again and again.
