Bermondsey residents got the chance to beautify their bikes last weekend to prepare for the Tour de France coming to SE1 on Sunday 8 July.

Artists from Arts Express helped local residents decorate their bikes with flags, ribbons and flowers in red, white and blue at the Beautiful Bike Day in Spa Gardens.

There was also a bike race and a Dr Bike clinic with DJs from Radio Peckham spinning the tunes.

The bikes are now ready to take part in next Saturday's Bermondsey Carnival which starts at Spa Gardens at 12 noon and has the theme 'Great Journeys' to tie in with the Tour de France. The Carnival will wind its way along Southwark Park Road and officially open The Event in Southwark Park at 1pm.

"Excitement is growing in Southwark for the arrival of the Tour de France, and our Beautiful Bike Day event was perfect for focusing people's attention on cycling," says Cllr Lorraine Zuleta, executive member for culture, leisure and sport.

"We have organised a whole range of events and activities in Southwark next weekend to coincide with the arrival of the Tour. Come along and celebrate this global sports spectacular with us."

Stage One of the Tour will pass along the South Bank between Westminster and Blackfriars Bridges on Sunday morning, returning to SE1 via Tower Bridge before heading east along Jamaica Road. Find out about road closures and bus diversions.

• A free exhibition of Tour de France images by Graham Watson is at County Hall Gallery until Monday 9 July.
