Nearly 300 guests joined transport commissioner Peter Hendy and presenter Richard Bacon to celebrate the achievements made across London in the past year.

More than 100 entries were received across 14 categories and Southwark beat strong competition to win the award for 'Innovation in promoting travel plans to businesses'.

In 2005 Southwark established the Better Bankside Travel Planning Group – a network of businesses working with the borough to change the travel behaviour of their staff and members of the public assessing their services.

By working collaboratively in this way, the area has developed a Travel Plan and has implemented many initiatives that have had a positive impact and successfully reduced car use.

The borough of Southwark was also runner-up for the Best London Borough Travel Plan and Sustainable Transport Borough of the Year.

"We are delighted that our work with Bankside businesses to encourage more sustainable forms of transport has been recognised, and hope that a similar scheme that we have recently launched in Camberwell will match its success," says Cllr Lisa Rajan, executive member for environment and transport.

"These travel plans complement the whole range of other initiatives that Southwark Council has introduced to encourage walking, cycling and public transport options and reduce people's reliance on their cars."
