More than 5,000 children had fun jousting, drumming, learning circus tricks, and jumping on bouncy castles last week at a play day in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park.

The event was one of many organised across the UK for National Playday on 1 August, which this year had the theme 'our streets too'.

"I hope everyone attending the Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park event and indeed all the Playday events across London had a fun time," says Mayor of London Ken Livingstone.

" London's parents and carers should try and ensure young people have the opportunity for play every day."

Cllr Caroline Pidgeon, Southwark Council's executive member for children's services and education, was appointed the borough's "play champion" at the event.

"Play is essential for children to develop in all kinds of ways – to learn about themselves and the world around them, build their confidence, self-esteem and creativity, and most importantly to have fun," says Cllr Pidgeon.

"Every child deserves the chance to play, and providing good play opportunities is everyone's responsibility. That is why as Southwark's play champion I'll be promoting the importance of play with colleagues and residents, and ensuring that a child's right to play is highlighted throughout the council."
