Chavi at the Novas Contemporary Urban Centre

The show contrasts stereotypes and myths with how Romany artists truly depict their culture. The artists employ basic street materials, like trash bins and scrap metal, while also using old mirrors to convey their view on the Chavi culture.

Long used as a derogatory label for working class youths, the word Chavi is being embraced as a distinct cultural term now. The three artists who created these works, Daniel Baker and Damian and Delaine Le Bas attempt to highlight the cultural significance and influence of the broader Gypsy culture. The exhibit is a fascinating look into an oft forgotten culture and provides a unique viewpoint on society as a whole.
