In Febuary postal bosses announced plans to close 169 post offices in London, including Dockhead Post Office in SE1.

On Monday Liberal Democrat London Assembly candidate for Lambeth and Southwark Cllr Caroline Pidgeon joined Simon Hughes MP and local councillors and campaigners at the Post Office Ltd's Old Street HQ to hand in a petition against the planned closures signed by hundreds of people.

"The support from local residents for our local post offices has been overwhelming and shows the central role that these branches play in the lives of people in both Lambeth and Southwark," says Cllr Pidgeon.

"The Post Office and government ministers need to recognise just how hard a blow would be dealt to local people, especially older residents, if these branches close. Local people have spoken – the Post Office and the government need to listen."

The closure programme has been opposed by politicians across the political spectrum including incumbent local London Assembly member Val Shawcross.

Responses to the proposed closure of Dockhead Post Office can be submitted at www.postoffice.co.uk/networkchange until Wednesday 2 April.
