Apple Day at Borough Market

The festivities started at the Choral Eucharist in Southwark Cathedral where the Flower Guild had created special displays using apples.

The lessons were read by Borough Market trader Federico Fugazza of Argentine Folklore and Will Sibley, past master of the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers and a current market trustee.

Music sung by the Cathedral's Merbecke Choir included Elizabeth Poston's Jesus Christ, the apple tree.

Meanwhile at Bankside Pier revellers were gathering for The Lions part's annual October Plenty harvest performance and procession. The cast and audience were able get at least some respite from the rain by gathering inside Shakespeare's Globe.

The October Plenty procession, including the giant Corn Queene figure, made its way along Bankside and Park Street into the heart of the market. This year's revels included a performance of two of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.

Traders in the market were selling a variety of apple-related produce. Events included an apple-peeling competition.

• Over at Surrey Docks Farm in Rotherhithe cider-mad members of the SE1 forum were busy pressing apples to make their own cider.
