New seat encourages South Bank visitors to lie down and contemplate the sky

The first Skystation has been installed outside the Hayward Gallery on the South Bank by cultural agency Futurecity. Their '100 Places Project' aims to place Skystations across the country.

Skystation's contours are intended to fit the reclining human figure. Users will be encouraged to take photographs of the sky above and the project will be linked by a collaborative website where these photographs can be shared.

"Skystation is designed to offer a rare opportunity in a city to stop for a minute, lie back and enjoy the sense of space above," says Peter Newman.

"In the best tradition of British street furniture it is inscribed with a dedication 'In Loving Memory Of Those Yet To Be Born' as it proposes the act of looking up and thinking about the future. Its circular form makes conversation between strangers almost inevitable."

Skystation will be outside the Hayward Gallery until 14 September. It will then move to 100% Design at Earls Court.

Skystation will be available in a limited edition of 100 from Futureditions, an online gallery of limited edition art works developed by Futurecity in collaboration with artists and designers.
