Police were called at 7.40am on Saturday to Walworth Road close to the Elephant and Castle after a double decker bus was in collision with a female pedestrian.

The woman was taken to Royal London Hospital suffering from head wounds but later died from her injuries.

The woman's family have been informed but she has not been named.

Walworth Road was closed between the Elephant and East Street for most of Saturday morning.

Police officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

"The 176 bus was travelling southbound on Walworth Road on one of south London's main routes," says Sgt Paul Sanders.

"Many motorists and pedestrians will have seen the incident and I would urge them to call police to help with our investigation."

Members of the public should call the Collision investigation Unit at Catford on 020 8285 1574.
