Morley College takes anti-cuts petition to Downing Street

The Westminster Bridge Road college has rallied support from staff, current and past students, the local community and partners to sign the petition, as well as writing to MPs to underline the value of adult education at a time when all public spending is under scrutiny.

Morley College says that adult education plays a crucial role in the community and benefits those who undertake it through promoting personal development, well-being, citizenship and increasing employability.

The college also argues that adult education fits in with the Government's 'Big Society' initiative by supporting social, cultural and economic interests.

One of those representing Morley in Downing Street was Mark Beaton, a 2010 Adult Learners' Week award-winner who fought his way back from the depths of mental and physical illness, homelessness and unemployment to qualify as a sports massage therapist and start his own business.

Students who signed the petition cited adult education as "life changing", "vital for health, well-being and social cohesion" and "an investment in the future of the country".
