Ron Kerr, chief executive of Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, heads the list of SE1 people included in the New Year honours list.

Ron Kerr is knighted for services to healthcare. He took charge of SE1's two hospitals in 2007 in succession to Jonathan Michael who was himself knighted in 2005.

"We are absolutely delighted to learn of Ron's knighthood," says trust chairman Patricia Moberly. "This is a richly deserved personal award that honours his lifetime of commitment to the National Health Service. Ron will say, quite rightly, that this distinction recognises also the achievements of the trust and other organisations under his leadership."

The Venerable Michael Ipgrave, Archdeacon of Southwark and Canon Missioner of Southwark Cathedral, receives an OBE for services to inter-faith relations in London.

Peter Kyle, who retired this year as chief executive of Shakespeare's Globe on Bankside, receives the OBE for services to drama.

Eric Sutherns, bridge master of Tower Bridge, receives the MBE for services to the City of London Corporation.

Sutherns joined the staff at Tower Bridge more than two decades ago after a 23-year career in the Royal Navy.

Sutherns gave the Queen a guided tour of the bridge when she paid a visit last February.

The bridge is currently being repainted and there are no bridge lifts until the end of March 2011. Southwark and Tower Hamlets councils vetoed an application by the City of London Corporation to place advertising banners on the scaffolding currently enclosing the bascules.
