Southwark Cathedral to celebrate King James Bible anniversary

“Southwark Cathedral has a particular link with the anniversary because Lancelot Andrewes, who was a leading member of the committee that oversaw the translation of the King James Version of the Bible, is buried in Southwark Cathedral," says Canon Andrew Nunn, acting Dean of Southwark.

"Born in 1555 he was an English clergyman and scholar who held high positions in the Church of England and in particular as Bishop of Winchester during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I.

"In the Church of England he is commemorated on 25 September, the day upon which he died.

"We have a number of events planned throughout the year but hope that this is one way in which we can share the beauty of the translation with those who worship with us at Choral Evensong on Sundays.”

From Palm Sunday to Easter Monday Shakespeare's Globe will present a reading of the King James Bible as part of its The Word is God season.

Later in the year the National Theatre is also expected to stage a series of events to mark the anniversary.
