A mobile recycling centre to collect textiles, small electrical appliances, batteries, discs, cardboard and small wooden items will visit two estates in SE1 on the third Saturday of every month.

The mobile recycling centre has been created by Southwark Council and Veolia to allow residents to recycle items which cannot be included in ordinary household collections.

Items collected by the mobile recycling centre are brought to Southwark's new integrated waste management facility just off the Old Kent Road where they are sent to reprocessing companies for recycling.

The new vehicle will visit SE1 on the third Saturday of each month starting on 17 March. The mobile centre will be outside Bramwell House in Harper Road on the Rockingham Estate between 9am and 11.30am.

Between 1pm and 3.30pm the van will be parked outside Otford House on the Tabard Gardens Estate.

"This is another important step in delivering recycling opportunities for our council tenants and leaseholders," says Cllr Barrie Hargrove, Southwark's cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling.

"Working with our partners Veolia Environmental Services to make it easier and simpler to recycle is the key to getting the commitment of residents across the borough to recycle as much of their household waste as possible."

Simon Bussell, managing director of Veolia Environmental Services in Southwark, said: "This service is an important addition to those we offer residents in Southwark and I'm delighted to see it get off to a good start.

"I hope that residents will continue to make use of the mobile recycling centre and if the scheme is successful, we may well look to expand the number of estates we cover."

The service has been funded by a £50,000 grant from the London Waste and Recycling Board.
