The London Dungeon could leave its home of more than 35 years at London Bridge for a new base at County Hall on the South Bank if a planning application is approved by Lambeth Council next week.

Merlin Entertainments has applied to Lambeth Council for permission to relocate the Toley Street horror attraction to the ground floor and basement of the former home of London's government on the South Bank. The proposed site for the dungeon includes the space formerly occupied by the Dali Universe gallery.

A move to County Hall would bring the Dungeon closer to its sister Merlin Entertainments attractions as the London Eye and the Sea Life London Aquarium.

In a statement published on the Scare Attractions website Merlin Entertainments has stressed that no decision has been taken to relocate the London Dungeon and a move to the South Bank is just one of several options.

Merlin says that the planning application to Lambeth Council "reflects the company’s ongoing discussions with Network Rail relating to their long term capital investment plan to redevelop London Bridge Station and the surrounding area as part of the future Thameslink programme.

"Both Merlin and Network Rail are looking to minimise the disruption of any such works to their business, and as such one possible solution would therefore be to relocate the dungeon, should a suitable site be found."

The company's statement also notes that "the South Bank is a high visitor traffic area for visitors, and [relocation] could also offer significant visitor benefits through the development of joint tickets, offers and promotions."

Lambeth Council's planning applications committee will consider the proposals at its meeting on Tuesday 24 April.
