Police: "25 alcohol seizures a week" in Waterloo churchyard

London SE1 website team

Police and wardens have been carrying out more than 25 alcohol seizures each week in the churchyard of St John's Waterloo since drinking was banned in the gardens in May.

In its latest newsletter the Bishop's ward safer neighbourhood team reports that: "Your local policing team works in partnership with other agencies including the local authority, Thames Reach and the South Bank Patrol to address the public disorder related to alcohol.

"The main focus of our activity has been around St John's Church where we have a dedicated officer posted to enforce the controlled drinking zone (CDZ) [which] allows us to confiscate alcohol.

"Recently the team has made over 25 alcohol seizures each week at this location. We are pleased to report that this situation is now improving."

In May Lambeth Council banned all alcohol consumption in the churchyard in response to complaints about "rowdy and aggressive" street drinkers.
