Paralympic torch relay to visit SE1 twice on Wednesday 29 August

London SE1 website team

Details of the route of the Paralympic torch relay through London have been confirmed - including sections along the South Bank and through Bermondsey.

On Wednesday 22 August national flames will be created at the summit of the highest peaks of the four home nations: Scafell Pike (England), Snowdon (Wales), Ben Nevis (Scotland) and Slieve Donard (Northern Ireland).

The four individual flames will then be placed in a miner's lantern and transferred to the nation's capital cities where they will each become the focus for a day of Paralympic celebrations.

From here the four national flames will be taken to Stoke Mandeville, spiritual home of the Paralympic movement, where they will be united during a ceremony on Tuesday 28 August to create the London 2012 Paralympic flame.

During the 24-hour relay through London the flame will arrive in SE1 via Lambeth Bridge at lunchtime on Wednesday 29 August.

The relay will make its way to the London Eye via Lambeth Palace Road, York Road and Chicheley Street before heading north along the Queen's Walk, under Hungerford Bridge and Waterloo Bridge.

At the National Theatre the relay continues along Theatre Avenue, Belvedere Road and Concert Hall Approach before leaving Lambeth and SE1 via Waterloo Bridge.

After a tour of the City of London the flame will return to SE1 – and arrive in Southwark – via Tower Bridge, make a loop round City Hall and then continue east along Tooley Street and Jamaica Road to Rotherhithe and Surrey Docks.

"We have created a unique identity for the Paralympic Torch Relay which will be a celebration of courage, determination, inspiration and equality that every Paralympian represents," said Lord Coe, chairman of LOCOG.

"By creating the four flames through human endeavour at the four highest peaks in the UK we will ensure that the spirit of each home nation is represented in the Paralympic flame."

• Full details of the route are available on the London 2012 website.
