Architects chosen for Queen Elizabeth Hall and Hayward revamp

"We are delighted to name Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios as lead architect," said Alan Bishop, chief executive of Southbank Centre.

"Their strong understanding of our festival site and their participatory design approach make them ideal partners in the renewal of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery complex.

"This is the important next step in the transformation of Southbank Centre, which began with the refurbishment of the Royal Festival Hall. I thank all the shortlisted practices in a very strong field for their proposals."

Rick Mather, Southbank Centre's masterplan architect and a member of the selection panel, said: "We heard a huge amount of high quality and serious thinking demonstrating six quite different approaches to this part of the site. Feilden Clegg Bradley Studio's proposals won because they best understood the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery complex and how it can be enjoyed and used more effectively.

"I look forward to seeing their designs develop over the coming months."

Peter Clegg from FCBS said: "We are delighted to have been selected to work on the redevelopment of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery complex at Southbank Centre. As an architectural project it presents huge challenges and opportunities to work with some extraordinary buildings and with one of the greatest cultural institutions in the world."

Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios will now work closely with Southbank Centre to develop design proposals for this part of the 21-acre site. In addition to the core refurbishment, they will explore a more ambitious project to reclaim unused and underused space for social and cultural use.

The design proposals will be published in Spring 2013.

In July Arts Council England awarded Southbank Centre a development grant of £3.32 million to help it work up plans for the £43 million scheme.
