Thatcher’s final journey via the Elephant & Castle

London SE1 website team

Baroness Thatcher's funeral cortege travelled through SE1 on Wednesday lunchtime as the hearse carrying her coffin made its way from St Paul's Cathedral to Mortlake Crematorium.

After the service at St Paul's the former prime minister's funeral cortege entered Southwark via Blackfriars Bridge and travelled south along Blackfriars Road, London Road, the Elephant & Castle and Newington Butts.

Traffic on Blackfriars Bridge, Westminster Bridge and Waterloo Bridge had been restricted since early on Wednesday morning.

Before the funeral, as the gun carriage carrying Lady Thatcher's coffin travelled along Fleet Street and Ludgate Hill, a gun salute was fired from the Tower of London.

The day's policing operation was controlled from the Metropolitan Police's central communications command in Lambeth Road.
