Guests at the opening ceremony included representatives of the NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group and Southwark Council's adult social care department.

The care home, which had a chequered history under its previous owner Southern Cross, is now part of the HC-One group.

"The launch of a new specialised dementia nursing unit is an important step for Tower Bridge Care Home and enables us to provide some of the very best dementia care available in London," said manager Kulvinder Sidhu.

"We were very pleased to receive so much support from the local community, the local council and our local MP for the important work we are doing here.

"In the short time that the unit has been running, we have already seen marked improvements in residents' sleeping patterns, communication skills and socialising. The early signs are that residents feel really comfortable and secure in their new home."

Simon Hughes MP said: "It was a real privilege to be able to officially open the new specialised dementia unit at Tower Bridge Care Home.

"When you remember the great service older members of our community have contributed over the years it is really important to make sure that they have the best possible care when they need it.

"The significant new investment in dementia care in the Tower Bridge Care Home reflects how much we value older members of our community.

"I was privileged to see the hard work and dedication of the care staff in the home who do a difficult job with real kindness and professionalism.

" It was also great to hear how residents have already enjoyed significant improvements in their condition as a result of the care they are receiving in the new unit."

• Tower Bridge Care Home will be opening its doors to the public on Saturday 21 June as part of the first ever National Care Home Open Day.
