The fire broke out in an outbuilding behind the craft workshops at the corner of Webber Street and Rushworth Street.

Crews from Dockhead, Dowgate, Old Kent Road and Southwark fire stations dealt with the incident.

A command unit based at Islington was also dispatched to coordinate the response.

The fire engine from Southwark Fire Station – just a few hundred yards away in Southwark Bridge Road – was first on the scene.

The station is likely to close under plans championed by Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

The London Ambulance Service also sent several vehicles to the scene.
