The Environment Agency issued a flood alert on Monday morning warning of possible flooding at locations along the tidal Thames in central London including the Bankside riverside walkway close to Tate Modern and the Millennium Bridge.

A high tide of 4.5 metres was expected at 1.45pm whilst this morning the agency was reporting the river flowing over Teddington Weir at 55 cubic metres per second.

The riverside walkway at Bankside was specially landscaped when Tate Modern opened to incorporate subtle flood defences.

The last flood alert in central London was in December 2012.

One of the most memorable floods at Bankside in recent years occurred in December 2005 when the riverside was lined with stalls for the Christmas Frost Fair event.
