Local road safety campaigners have launched a petition calling on Transport for London and Southwark Council to install new pelican crossings at two junctions on Borough High Street.

The online petition has been launched by Southwark Living Streets, Boroughbabies and SE1 Safe Roads.

The campaigners want pedestrian phases added to the traffic lights at the junction of Borough High Street, Trinity Street and Great Suffolk Street. In 2011 a similar e-petition asked the council to install a zebra crossing.

The petitioners also point out that there is no pedestrian phase on the lights at the crossing between Brandon House and St George the Martyr Church.

More than 100 people have already backed the petition, including Cathedrals ward councillors Adele Morris and David Noakes, Chaucer ward's Claire Hickson and Poddy Clark and Labour parliamentary candidate Neil Coyle.

A 'day of action' is planned on Friday 6 December to draw attention to the campaign.

A year ago the same coalition of campaign groups held a protest at Elephant & Castle to persuade TfL to introduce a 20 mph speed limit at that junction. The Mayor of London has since revealed that a reduction of the speed limit is under serious consideration.

Two years ago Southwark Living Street suggested an Oxford Circus-style diagonal crossing for the junction of Borough High Street, Marshalsea Road and Great Dover Street.
