Filmmaker retraces steps of 1927 colour cinematographer

During the 1920s cinematographer Claude Friese-Greene travelled across the UK with his new colour film camera.

Some of his most stunning images were recently restored by the BFI and published on social media and video websites.

Since February last year filmmaker Simon Smith has attempted to capture every one of Friese-Greene's shots, standing in his footsteps and using modern equivalents of his camera and lenses.

Smith's six-minute film – which shows footage from 1927 and 2013 side-by-side – includes shots of Tower Bridge Road, the view from Tower Bridge, London Bridge, Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament seen from Albert Embankment close to St Thomas' Hospital.

The 1927 footage shows trams and open-top buses turning the corner from Tower Bridge Road into Tooley Street, past what is now The Pommeler's Rest pub.
