A Nativity scene with a difference at Southwark Cathedral

This year's Nativity scene at Southwark Cathedral is rather different to usual: the figures have no faces, arms or legs.

French artist and product designer Emilie Voirin raised more than £6,000 on crowdfunding website Kickstarter for her Minimal Nativity project which replaces the people and animals in the stable with plain wooden blocks.

"When I was a kid I used to ask why Baby Jesus was blonde and blue-eyed in our crèche," said the artist.

"I started making upcycled minimal nativities out of off-cuts from workshop wood a few years ago.

"The idea was to recreate the Nativity scene with a minimum amount of features while still representing the story."

The life-size Minimal Nativity can be seen in front of the high altar at Southwark Cathedral until the feast of Candlemas on 2 February.

Miniature versions are on sale in the cathedral shop.
