Osteopathy school can now award its own degrees

The British School of Osteopathy - based in Southwark for nearly 20 years - has been granted the power to award its own degrees by the Privy Council.

Until now, the BSO's osteopathy degrees have been validated through a partnership with the University of Bedfordshire, but from 2015 onwards, the school will be able to award its own degrees.

The school's main base is in Borough High Street and its clinic can be found in Southwark Bridge Road.

The BSO was founded in 1917 and has been based in SE1 since 1997.

"I am incredibly proud to be leading the British School of Osteopathy at such a momentous time in its history," said Charles Hunt, principal & chief executive.

"Everyone at the school has worked so hard over the last few years towards these achievements. The board, management team, staff and students have been 100 per cent behind our work, and I would like to thank them all.

"As we co-ordinate our celebrations for our centenary year, it is wonderful that we will hold the first graduation ceremony as an autonomous institution – where we will be awarding British School of Osteopathy degrees – in 2017."

From its clinical centre in Southwark Bridge Road the BSO offers over 40,000 patient appointments per year, including specialist in-house clinics for people living with chronic pain, children, expectant mothers, people with sports injuries and those living with HIV/AIDS.

It also runs a growing portfolio of outreach community clinics, which offer free osteopathy to groups who might not otherwise be able to afford or access it.
