Controlled parking zone C2 - consultation launched

London SE1 website team

Southwark Council is inviting residents and businesses in the C2 controlled parking zone to comment on potential changes to current on-street parking rules.

The Borough and Bankside (C) Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) was introduced in 1974 and was split into two smaller zones for Bankside (C1) and Borough (C2) 15 years ago in connection with the congestion charge.

Zone C2 is roughly centred on St George's Circus and stretches north to Pocock Street, east to Borough High Street, south to Brook Drive and west to the boundary with Lambeth in Waterloo.

"Some people have told us that the area is subject to increasing pressure on kerbside parking," says Southwark Council.

"This may be due to a combination of new developments, new highway projects, increasing business and resident population, as well as visitors and deliveries to the area.

"While there has been a substantial change to the demographics in the area, the available kerbside space has remained broadly the same. It's for this reason we need to prioritise and allocate the kerbside space carefully, to meet the various needs of residents, businesses and visitors to the area."

C2 parking zone currently operates from Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 6.30pm, whereas the C1 zone operates on Saturdays too.

"I am delighted that the council has agreed to carry out a full review of the C2 controlled parking zone following my campaign and the support of local residents," said Cllr David Noakes, Lib Dem councillor for Cathedrals ward.

"This is the first review of the residents' parking scheme in this area for 10 years and it is clear from residents' casework and responses that they are experiencing increasing problems parking as a result of the growing resident and business populations and the amount of works being carried out in the area for utilities and developments.

"I would strongly urge all residents, whether you have a car or not, to send in your views about the operational hours and any other suggested improvements that can be made to the bays and road markings to improve the situation before the closing date of 29 July."

Full details of the consultation – and a map of the zone – are available on the Southwark website.
