Mercato Metropolitano – which originated in Turin – has taken over part of the Borough Triangle site owned by social housing provider Peabody.

"The western world has a growing dependence on industrialised food and products that are mass produced with a focus on sales, not on quality," said founder Andrea Rasca.

"As a result we have lost the sense of what our bodies really need. We don't need something just to fill our bellies, we need healthy, hearty and exciting food to make our bodies and minds work properly.

"And on a social level what could be better than to share good and tasty food with our friends and family. That is what is at the heart of Mercato Metropolitano which we will bring to our new customers in London."

Plans to redevelop the site recently stalled when Peabody fell out with Ministry of Sound in spectacular fashion.

"Peabody's social purpose and focus on wellbeing fits perfectly with Mercato's approach, and we're looking forward to working with them to bring their unique experience to Londoners," said Veronica Kirwan, Peabody director of community programmes.

"Not only will this be a fantastic destination for families and friends to come and enjoy food and entertainment, but our partnership will also mean new job opportunities, educational offerings, and other community benefits for local people."

The buildings have previously been used by Hotel Elephant for arts events and the open-air space was previously used for a pop-up venue called The Paperworks.
