The Trustees of Borough Market have named Darren Henaghan as the market's next managing director.

Darren Henaghan – currently environment director at Ealing Council – will take up his new role on 1 October.

He will succeed Keith Davis who is retiring at the end of September after five years at the helm.

Born and raised on a beef farm in Staffordshire, Darren is rooted in the world of food production. He has served as a trustee of Waste Watch, an environmental charity, and held a series of government advisory roles covering food safety and other regulatory matters.

"As a long-term resident of southeast London, with a track record in public service across several London boroughs, Darren has gained an acute understanding of the community that this market is here to serve," said Donald Hyslop, chair of the Trustees of Borough Market.

"It is this, paired with his considerable experience of managing major projects on behalf of multiple stakeholders, that gives us confidence in his ability to work alongside the market's staff, trustees and traders to sustain the progress that has been made under Keith Davis' stewardship over the last 5 years.

"As the trustees of this world renowned food institution, we are extremely grateful to Keith for the work he has put in over the past five years. We are confident that with Darren's leadership Borough Market will continue to thrive for many years to come."

Darren Henaghan said: "Borough Market is a microcosm of what makes me so proud to be part of London. It brings together the best produce from around the world and like London itself, is the very essence of creativity, pride and diversity. I am looking forward to playing my part in its continued growth and success."
