'The Eye On The Road' by digital artist Helen Marshall of the People's Picture was installed last month on the side of the award-winning Bermondsey Square bicycle store, next to Sainsbury's Local.

The piece is the latest project of the Tower Bridge Road Alliance and was funded by Southwark Council's High Street Challenge.

Helen Marshall said: "It was a refreshing challenge working on this commission as it is my first street artwork and I think the location will capture the attention of many passers by.

"The artwork was composed of many photographs, in particular those of portraits of people who live and work in the area. These present day portraits are juxtaposed with faces of history, kindly gathered and lent by Southwark Council's heritage department.

"The artwork is an iconic eye looking towards the south end of Tower Bridge Road, an area of colourful businesses, shops and people.

"As a personal signature, the eye also happens to be the eye of my daughter who turns 21 shortly. I am grateful to the council and the Tower Bridge Road Alliance for their open and creative approach to the project and I hope this opportunity leads to a new series of street artworks I'm able to create across London, with Southwark Council setting the precedent."

Tower Tandoori's Suhel Ahmed – chair of the Tower Bridge Road Alliance – said: "We are so proud to be home to this amazing piece of art 'Eye on the Road'.

"It's wonderful to see portraits of so many local people and businesses who make Tower Bridge Road the place it is today, featured in the mural. The Tower Bridge Road Alliance has worked tirelessly to help improve our local community for everyone.

"We hope to carry on this good work for the community with the support of Southwark Council."
