Founded in 1947, the BGS is a multi-disciplinary membership organisation bringing together healthcare professionals engaged in the specialist treatment and care of older people across the UK.

Prince Charles has been patron of the society for more than two decades.

On arriving at St Thomas’ Hospital, the prince met staff who care for older people at Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals and in the community.

They included doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals who spoke to the prince about their roles, demonstrated some of the techniques used to prevent falls, and explained how patients with dementia are treated with dignity and respect.

He also met older patients at the hospital and discussed their experiences and priorities when receiving care.

BGS president Dr Eileen Burns said: "The prince’s attendance is testament to his continuing support for the charity, and made our celebration even more special."
