Help to plan an edible hedge, collect a free compost caddy, barbecue and meet some feathered friends from Vauxhall City Farm.

Bankside Open Spaces Trust and local residents from Redman, Lant and Bittern Estate are celebrating the launch of the RHS Britain in Bloom and RHS It's Your Neighbourhood campaigns by rolling up their sleeves to be part of a tree planting movement to double native trees and woods in the UK.

This year, RHS Britain in Bloom has teamed up with the Woodland Trust to giveaway up to 200,000 free tree saplings to be planted by communities across the UK. Both the RHS and the Woodland Trust are supporting the United Nation's 2011 International Year of Forests to raise awareness of conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests and recognise the benefits trees bring to our wildlife and communities.

Volunteers of all ages will be planting a wildlife hedge as part of the Royal Horticultural Society's annual Britain in Bloom launch.

Bankside Open Spaces Trust will be one of many RHS Britain in Bloom and RHS It's Your Neighbourhood groups planting tree saplings throughout the month of March, to launch their local campaign and make a significant contribution to increasing the number of trees in Britain.

Helen John from Bankside Open Spaces Trust, who is coordinating the event with the local tenants' and residents' association said: "We're welcoming everyone from the SE1 community to help us with this In Bloom event.

"We'll be celebrating spring at Redman Green where we are building a food garden to help people across Bankside grow their own."
