St George's Day Celebrations

From Furrow to Borough

This event is in the past. This is an archive page for reference.

Borough Market will be celebrating St George's patronage of English farmers and butchers; plotting the journey of the finest seasonal produce from furrow to Borough through displays, entertainment and cookery and craft presentations.

The programme is designed around the skills and products of the farmers and butchers trading at Borough Market, and aims to both entertain and inform as customers go about their weekly shop.

The Jubilee Market kitchen is the venue for a series of demonstrations which will include a masterclass in butchery from the team at the Ginger Pig; an introduction to foraging for wild food in the English countryside from Fitz Fine Foods and the secrets of successful pie making by the legendary Mrs Kings Pork Pies. The day culminates with a look at the gastronomic alliance of English ale and curry in the form of a joint presentation from Utobeer and Gujarati Rasoi.

The Golden Company's Hackney beekeepers will be in the Market to illustrate the essential links between the insect world and the successful cultivation of crops, and the many benefits of linseed products will be explored by Borough Market cook Lesley Ball, accompanied by Clare Skelton of Flax Farm. In addition a number of Traders will be putting their own individual stamp on the celebrations by creating one-off delicacies for the occasion; like Greedy Goat with their St George's Day ice cream and the Tomato Stall's cocktails.

Entertainment includes the opportunity for children to try out for the Borough Market vegetable orchestra; traditional songs and arias performed around the Market by English Soprano Sarah Minns, and sets from the Southwark-basd women's morris side, New Esperance.
