May Day Walk

This event is in the past. This is an archive page for reference.

Guided walk from Bankside to Camberwell with CoolTan Arts ending with Maypole dancing on Camberwell Green.

For this walk participants are invited to dress up as Green Men, pagans in garlands, May Kings or Queens, or anything else that will help to welcome the return of spring.

This walk will explore the origins of May Day, the May pole, and the history of May Day in Southwark. There will also be a look at the political importance of May day with an anarchist/communist insight.

CoolTan will be joined by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence who will perform a blessing marking IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia) at the Cross Bones Graveyard.
