Open Studio Weekend

Make Space Studios is a new community of artists, artisans and creative businesses next to Waterloo station.

Make Space have taken some once abandoned and derelict buildings and converted them into a creative space.

Having open studios allows the public to see into the otherwise private creative space of an artist, enabling you to view both work and practices in progress from ceramics and silver-smithing, glassmaking and mosaic work, along with fine art practices of painting, sculpture and illustration.

Several rooms throughout the site will house group exhibitions of abstract, figurative and landscape painting, ceramics, glass sculpture and unique furniture design.

The on-site Simulator Gallery will host a solo show 'Wunderkammer' by Tom Leamon.

Friday evening will see musical performances by in house musicians Columbus Giant, Expansion Hall and Eat Your Greenz. On Saturday there will be screenings of animation by Patrick Blower and The Unthank Alliance, a documentary by Joanne Postewaite and video portrait of the gold weaver Lucie Heskett-Brem.

All screenings will be followed by an opportunity to discuss the work with the artists.

On Sunday Eat Your Greenz will provide a street art demonstration, the celebrated 'Something beginning with L' will perform and Jamie Quantrill will screen his debut feature film.

The Boiler Room – the sole remnant of the site's time as the Necropolis Railway station will be showcasing various works by performance artists.

Many of commuters will have noticed the newly installed 'Make Space Studios' sign in giant pink letters running along the top of the building and will want to find out more.

The brand new Studio 180 on Lambeth Road will be opening its doors for the first time. Sister studio to Make Space, 180 is a converted Edwardian terrace that has been thoughtfully and beautifully modified to house studios for full time artists.

Studio 180 will be holding its private view on Friday 6 May and will continue to offer guided tours to see the fascinating work of Karla Hammer, silversmith and painter; Jamie Quantrill, film maker; Lucy Parnell, Musician and Jen X, performance artist.
