Southwark Council invites everyone to come and learn about the military and civilian experiences of black British men and women during the First World War 1914-1918.

Black Poppies, a talk based on Stephen Bourne's latest book, is about the heritage of black people during the First World War. It is a fascinating and hidden history, and uncovering it will offer many people an exciting way into appreciating the importance of heritage to our lives today.

Stephen's latest book, also called Black Poppies, is currently available from History Press.

The story is about heroines and heroes, tragedies and triumphs, love and hate, journeys across oceans and the start of a new multicultural society here in the UK. A leading community historian, Stephen is Southwark born and raised and is hugely committed to his local community,

The exhibition based on the book will be on display at Southwark Council's main offices at 160 Tooley Street, between 6 and 17 October.
