Charlie Chaplin's Elephant & Castle

This event is in the past. This is an archive page for reference.

The silent film star Charlie Chaplin was born and raised in what was once the poorest part of London.

On this walk led by John Constable you will explore Chaplin's childhood haunts around the Elephant and Walworth Road, including the church where his parents were married, the sites of the 'South London Palace' and other celebrated music halls from when this area was a hot-bed of working class culture.

Along the way John will introduce other memorable characters like Mary Seacole, Marie Lloyd and Austin Osman Spare, and walkers will be treated to John's performance of the music-hall classic 'Knocked 'Em In The Old Kent Road'.
