Plans for redevelopment of Tesco store at Tesco Southwark

Public exhibition of proposals by Tesco for an upgraded supermarket, new facilities such as cafs and community space and new homes above the Old Kent Road store.

Local residents, businesses and shoppers are invited to view the proposals in a mobile exhibition unit in the store's car park.

A planning application is expected later this summer.

In October 2006 Tesco undertook a major consultation on its initial plans to redevelop the site.

Tesco says that its new plans seek to incorporate suggestions received from local residents and shoppers.

Current proposals include:
• An upgraded Tesco store
• 488 new homes (50% of these will be affordable homes)
• New restaurants, cafes and shops along the Old Kent Road
• Better pedestrian links through the site to the surrounding area
• New community facilities such as nursery or health centre
• Cycle lanes immediately around the Tesco site
• Sustainable technology

"We had a very positive response when we announced the plans last year," says Tesco's James Wiggam.

"The local community warmly welcomed many of our ideas, such as turning the entrance to the supermarket onto the Old Kent Road and providing housing above the new store. Many consultation respondents also put forward suggestions on how they would like the scheme taken forward and we have spent the past eight months working up proposals that respond to the feedback.

"We feel the revised plans build on our original scheme to deliver a more vibrant, sustainable, mixed use development that will regenerate the wider area. Our plans respond to the need for extra jobs and housing in the borough and we are committed to providing a development that acts as a catalyst for further investment along the Old Kent Road."
