Capital Age Festival

The Capital Age Festival is open to all and celebrates the often forgotten contribution older Londoners make to the capital.

Always a popular event, this year's Capital Age Festival includes tap legend Will Gaines, Jamaican jazz artist Totlyn Jackson (to be heard on Supersonic by Basement Jaxx), the Hoxton Singers, Company of Elders, Leap of Faith, plus other singers, musicians and performers.

There will be activities on the Riverside Terrace, in the Bar Foyer, the Riverside Foyer and the Clore Ballroom, including social dancing, buskers and steel pans. There is even the chance to join a giant Conga as it snakes its way through the Southbank Centre.

Highlight of the day will be the Big Chair Dance, a 20 minute performance involving more than 200 older Londoners, which has been specially devised by professional choreographers for older dancers of all abilities to perform sitting down and has been commissioned to coincide with Big Dance 2008, the citywide weeklong celebration of dance that runs from 5-13 July.

Following weeks of rehearsals in their homes and local community centres, the 'Big Chair Dancers' will perform to four short pieces of music, from hip hop to classical cello, with linking music specially composed by London composer and multi-instrumentalist Tunde Jegede.

The Big Chair Dance will take place at 3pm in the Clore Ballroom.
