Plans for Waterloo's riverside gardens started in 1936. Jubilee Gardens was finally opened in 1977 but was then used as a spoil heap by London Underground throughout the 1990s.

WCDG worked with other local organisations to get a new plan for the gardens approved in 2006, but this has been blocked by legal problems and a lack of cash.

The Southbank Centre (which currently manages the land) has been working in recent months with the architects to revise the plans and reduce the impact and cost.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, has promised £1.5 million towards costs in order to get the gardens opened for the Olympics in 2012.

St Thomas' Hospital serves a large number of people across central and south London, and is a major teaching hospital. It is also one of Waterloo's largest sites and improvements and changes could benefit local residents as well as patients and visitors. Steve McGuire explains.
