New Year Fireworks at London Eye

Once again millions of people around the world will have their eyes on the South Bank firework display around the London Eye, courtesy of the Mayor of London.

As a cost-cutting measure this year's display will last 8 minutes compared to 10 minutes in previous years.

Renowned pyrotechnician Christophe Berthonneau will light up the sky around the London Eye to mark the start of 2010.

Space is severely limited along the Thames to watch the fireworks live. For those able to able to get into the viewing areas, there will be specially mixed soundtrack from BBC Radio 1 as they wait for the fireworks at midnight.

There will be all night free travel on Tube, DLR, Tramlink on New Year's Eve. 24-hour bus routes will run as normal, but there will be fewer bus services leaving central London from around 7pm to 3am because of road closures.
