About Theatre Peckham

Background information

Over the past 29 years, Theatre Peckham has created a unique model of performing arts education and training for South London’s culturally diverse communities. Around 400 young people, aged from toddlers to 16+ are members of Theatre Peckham’s weekly workshop programme; a further 1,500 or so participate each year in a range of projects that are run in collaboration with a variety of partners including schools and community groups and most of the 9,000 plus audience members that attend Theatre Peckham’ productions are also young people. The overwhelming majority of these young people are from Black or other visible minority ethnic backgrounds (70% according to the records for 2011/12).

The Company’s base in the heart of Peckham is the 160 seat Theatre. For thousands of young people from one of the most deprived areas of London, this venue is a much loved and highly accessible introduction to professional theatre.

The Company is an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation and is regarded as a key player in the local arts and education landscape; the breadth and depth of the Company’s participatory base being recognised as a particular achievement. Moreover, the Company delivers against local and national priorities in terms of cultural diversity, economic disadvantage, children and young people and serving local audiences.

The executive team comprises Teresa Early, founder and Artistic Director and Suzy Smith, Executive Director. Between them they lead a small staff team and a host of workshop tutors.
