Alex hi,

How high are your ceilings? If you've got 6 inches to spare at the top, you could put in the suspended ceiling as sarah suggests. We had to do this in the end, as there was nothing in our lease to prevent the people above taking up the carpets and we only had the original floorboards! It was horrific. It's a bit pricey (2,500 for two rooms) but if you're at the stage of going bonkers, it could be worth it. Impact noise is actually significantly reduced (80-90%), it's barely audible (honestly). The more room you've got to spare on the ceilings, the better the result, but there are solutions that can at least do something depending on how much room you've got. I can recommend a few firms, as I looked around a lot, no connection etc.

Good luck - this kind of thing can be incredibly miserable, you have my sympathy.

my sympathies go to you. Last night my neighbours decide 3am was a good time for a spot of band practice. And no amount of loud knocking on their door was enough for them to hear me, so i just had to put up with it for 45 minutes.

Have you tried the community mediation service? This is just the kind of issue their volunteers specialise in helping neighbours to resolve. Southwark Mediation Centre
Give them a call -- it's worth a try.

Thanks everyone for your replies/suggestions. All are very much appreciated.

It is nice to know that a trouble
shared is a trouble halved.

I will let you know how I get on (hopefully this will help others in the future).

Regards,

Alex.
