Is the proposed Form 696 legislation which will cripple the pub/club scene across 21 London Boroughs. They want to compel licensees who want to hold live events to obtain the names/addresses/aliases/telephone numbers of performers and give them to the police, and even more worryingly the likely ethnicity of their audience. Failure to comply etc., will result in fines/imprisonment. The 696 form can only serve to deter the staging of live musical events- a wonderful form of activity in london and stifle free expression.

there is a petition http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Scrapthe696/

This doesn't seem to be a 'Government' idea, or a question of legislation.

It seems to have been something that originated with the Metropolitan Police and has been adopted by a number of boroughs as part of their licensing policies, including Lambeth and Southwark.

The question about ethnicity has been dropped. You can see the form here.

(This is an example of the problem with the No 10 petitions service, as it encourages people to attribute regional/local decisions to the Prime Minister personally even when the object of their protest has nothing to do with central Government)

erm, what is "bashment" music mentioned on the form????

The form asks what sort of music will be performed with three examples 'bashment, R'n'B, garage'. So that's the ethnicity question as good as covered then.

Why don't they just say "no MOBO" and have done with it?
I expect Bagpipes and string quartets are okay, then????

They'll be wanting to know what we're reading next - anyone for book burning????

JayBee, Bashment is sort of the modern (though its been around for a while) form of Jamaican Dancehall. Dancehall is sort of an offshoot of reggae. Bashment uses more electronic sounds.
