A pool isn't that expensive to build, it's the maintenance and ongoing costs such as lifeguards that rack up. I think charging a small amount for use plus getting a corporate sponsor/some Olympic and/or lottery funding could be an option. Or perhaps I am being too optimistic...

Carmenes82, Charles Dicken had a small swimming pool inside a groundfloor classroom years ago, thats where my children learnt to swim.

Perhaps thats the answer a collapsable pool which could water the florwers after a few days! wish I could remember the size and depth now....I used to visit Markeaton Park in derbyshire and when I saw all the children playing in the water felt full of nostalgia for what London children used take for granted...

Well if Brockwell Lido can thrive then so can a Burgess one. Jan's paddling pool could be next to it and maintained by the same staff, though I think that should be free.

just had a look at the document 'time for change' on the council website.

I don't know if this is an official bid document or not (the fact that its suggestions coincidentally add up to £6m suggests that it might be), but i was actually mildly impressed with it.

i think it's right to address the old roads and boundaries of the park first. Make the place feel more self-enclosed and give people the option to wander around the place without those straight 'A' to 'B' paths.

And make it more inviting with nicer entrances. Anyone who gets the bus up old kent road associates it with a weird green metal flower, unfriendly dogs and winos

If it really can be done for £6m, then go for it

Can't be worse than the dump we have now

Would it really be so costly to re-instate at least part of the canal as part of the scheme? It would be great for wildlife, cycling along or just meandering on foot and be a strong link to the history of the area.

Maybe a shallow canal, like what they've done at Surrey Queys and Wapping. Could look good under the foot bridge (is that still there?)

July consultations

The council will be holding consultations to help residents gain an understanding of the long term plans and their impact on the park. Also on the agenda will be the opportunity to explore the options for spending the funding that is currently available.

Everyone is welcome to get involved and attend the following consultations:

8, 10 and 11 July: Meet in the sports centre (Neate Street entrance. Between the astro turf and cricket/rugby areas) for walkabouts of three different routes.

Route 1: Lake and Old Kent road area.
Route 2: Trafalgar avenue to underpass taking in both sides of The Avenue including the sports area.
Route 3: Camberwell road to underpass.

Walkabouts will take place at the following times: 8 July at 6pm to 8pm; 10 and 11 July at 10am and 2pm.

More information on the long term vision for Burgess park can be found here: http://www.southwark.gov.uk/news/article/51/transforming_burgess_park

Burgess has a tough task, as the only big outside space round this way.

I'd encourage a focus on really good outside sports facilities, football pitches, a cricket square, a running track, Tennis courts? That'd be awesome. You could fit in a decent cycle track too.

A lido would be the gold star... London fields style would be great. If they are replacing the district heating in the Walworth estate as part of the development there could be economies to be made in using CHP heat to run the pool. I dream...

Perhaps a suitable site could be left for the lido in future, toward the north side of the park where it could be plumbed in as the redevelopment progresses.

Southwark Council is holding a series of consultation events this month on the plans for the park.

The first event at Burgess Park was last night, with lots of feedback. We'd like to urge anyone with an interest to come to the remaining ones - details on our facebook page: www.facebook.com/burgesspark
