The cafes are taking over!

There was an article on office buildings being converted into residential flats in the city on BBC London about a week ago.
It was really interesting...
An estate agent was on there explaining that developers won't touch them now because of the fact that they have to make a percentage of it affordable housing! Made himself look like an absolute idiot going on about how it wasn't worth their while anymore because they can't make any money on affordable housing and how it was unfair to developers etc etc.
I can't find a link for you all! Sorry!

On developments over a certain size the requirement is now about 30% affordable, I think. Meanwhile there's a lot of office space in the city that is going to stay empty for a long while, despite there being some good deals to be had on rents.

Both Potters Fields and The City both need to be proteceted from residential development or else they would lose their unique identities. 'Omega Man' catches the mood very nicely.

It is a great movie - Jan is right, Charlton Heston. The start has him driving around the deserted city in his car. He lives in a fortified mansion with all the loot he has garnered from the empty city around and he is going slowly mad. Then of course when night falls...

I find this discussion this "too many cafes" very interesting. And there are so many people in Europe and the USA how are discussing similar issues.
I'd be very interested if anyone of you went to this event:
"Coffee house debates to be revived at Starbucks on 19 March 2004"?
http://www.london-se1.co.uk/news/view/887
I would be very interested how it went and what people said.
Pease let me know. Thank you

Are they also discussing the old Charlton Hestom movie the Omega Man (which is *far* more interesting... see posts above).

I particularly enjoyed The Simpsons' parody, The Homega Man.
Ignorance is bliss

aaargh! I haven't seen it (doh!) I am a big fan of the 60s/70s/80s (post)apocalypse movie - I think it comes from growing up while we still had an Iron Curtain and the ready possibility of imminent nuclear annihilation (or so it often seemed).
